Chaos theory updates

Apex Legends’ latest Collection Event arrived on March 9, introducing exciting new challenges, dozens of cosmetics, and a comprehensive update to the hero shooter. While the Chaos Theory event proper is set to conclude on March 23, the other changes are permanent unless revised later. They include not only the usual bug fixes and balance improvements, but also a partial solo mode and some additional tactical options that can help you get squad wins. What’s more, Nintendo Switch owners will now be able to jump into the fray as well.

Hazardous Event

Risk and reward appear to be the main theme for this event. The Water Treatment Facility on the Kings Canyon map has been taken over by Caustic. The mad scientist Legend converted it into a laboratory full of toxic chemicals and higher-grade loot, including four Legendary items in hard-to-reach cages. Players can temporarily redirect some of the toxins in order to clear a path towards the prizes, or they can push through them. The environmental hazard may not be their biggest threat, though. Whichever method they choose, their enemies will get an excellent opportunity to farm kills!

There are other changes to the map, mostly aimed at rebalancing rewards and making some locations more worth fighting over:

The Mirage Voyage hoverboat has flown away to avoid the toxic fumes;
Some of the Crash Site loot has been moved to the spaceship;
Loot in the Spotted Lake has been lowered in quality;
Conversely, the wooden houses all around the map will now offer more and better items.

The standard Play Apex mode has been taken over by Ring Fury, a frenetic battle royale variant in which the big ring closing around the battlefield is joined by smaller rings that pop up all over the map. Those Ring Flares behave in the same way as the main ring but provide some additional heads-up on the map and through voice lines, allowing Legends to try and outrun them before they start. The need to suddenly abandon locations will surely test everyone’s teamwork skills, including even those players who have previously won the Team. Work. IV badge. As the shooter’s first escalation takeover, Ring Fury will become deadlier as the event goes on. Every few days, the flares will get bigger and more frequent, heading towards a truly chaotic culmination.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Collection Event without a rich array of collectibles. There are two dozen cosmetics including weapon and character skins with an imaginative historical theme. They may be purchased individually or in packs with Apex Coins or unlocked by using Crafting Metals. Completing the collection will also give early access to Bangalore’s newly-added heirloom set. Completing daily challenges will also earn points on a free prize track, up to 1,000 per day and 5,000 for the entire event. Advancing on this track will unlock more skins, as well as weapon charms, stat trackers, and other goodies. Finally, there are bigger challenges that may be completed to receive four special badges:

New Platform

The Nintendo Switch version of Apex Legends, which released simultaneously with this event, has the same features and content as the versions on other platforms. It also enjoys full cross-play with the other platforms from the start, letting them compete in the same ranked games. The Apex Predator tier is given to the top 750 players by rating on a platform, initiating a new scramble to the top on this device.

Although some users have complained about inferior performance and graphics, such problems were probably inevitable on a smaller, less powerful device. The developers have already released a patch resolving some of the lesser issues, and hopefully, they will be able to improve the performance in time. To make up for their late entry, Switch players automatically start at level 30 of the Season 8 Battle Pass. For the duration of the Chaos Theory event, they will also receive double XP to help them level accounts. Finally, players who log on before the season’s end will receive a free Pathfinder skin.

Go Solo

Players will now enjoy an intriguing alternative to standard matchmaking. When joining a non-ranked game, they will be able to choose between filling a duo or trio group or going it alone. A maximum of six solo players will be able to join a match. However, they are still going to face off against full enemy teams, raising the difficulty considerably. Depending on your inclinations, it may still be a fun alternative allowing a great degree of freedom and experimentation. It may also be an efficient way to complete challenges or work towards badges like Well-Rounded or Master of All.

Tweaks and Additions

A number of significant balance changes were included in the initial patch. Despite his Town Takeover, Caustic did not escape a nerf, with an increased cooldown and decreased damage on his Nox Gas Grenades. Pathfinder has lost his Low Profile perk, which was deemed inappropriate for his size and general effectiveness. Gibraltar and Horizon have been slightly weakened as well, while Wattson and Rampart were buffed, gaining passive shield regeneration and improved structure survivability respectively.

Equipment underwent more significant changes, beginning with the addition of a separate Survival Slot for protective items. At present, those consist of Mobile Respawn Beacons and Heat Shields. The latter is another innovation – a device that lets players block all Ring effects for as long as the shield remains active. When not having to counter the Ring, the shield provides accelerated healing and revivals. This item is obviously very useful in Ring Fury. It spawns more often in that mode and appears in the Legends’ inventories at the start. However, it also offers a way to flank enemies through the Ring in regular games.

The importance of good sights has been acknowledged, as players will be able to change optics even on guns with fully-locked attachment slots. Legendary Assault Rifles and Light Machine Guns will now start with 2x HCOG optics. In other changes, Mastiff’s damage output and Hemlok’s long-range accuracy have both decreased somewhat, while Wingman increased its magazine size.

Improved Visibility

Finally, there has been a number of important quality of life improvements, mainly focused on giving players more information. For example, Assists and Knocks are now recorded on HUDs and squad banners. Club names show up on post-game screens. Respawning players could ping their death boxes to track them down more easily. Tracking Badge progress has become more granular, meaning that a player working on Legend’s Wake can now see the exact amount of required kills left.

Conclusion

It is not unusual for Apex Legends to combine limited-time events with lasting updates. Chaos Theory is definitely one of the bigger occasions, though. Fittingly for its science theme, it experiments with different mechanics and game modes in ways that may have interesting results in future updates. Ring Fury will surely not be the last Escalation Mode, for example. Overall, there is plenty for players to enjoy in this ambitious update.
