How To Tame Animals In Fortnite

Animal taming is one of the new mechanics added to Fortnite in Season 6 of Chapter 2. Critters from several species have spawned all over the island in regular matches and Arena alike (but not in Team Rumble or limited-time modes). Frogs, chickens, bears, wolves, and raptors may be hunted for meat, bones, and other parts that could be used in crafting. With the exception of frogs, those creatures may also be put to use while alive. By taming the beasts, you can turn them on your enemies and gain a significant advantage on the battlefield. Read on to learn out how to do that, as well as the key differences between the tameable animals.

The Basics

Taming an animal is simple in theory and may be practiced side by side with powerleveling. With the exception of chickens, they all require the following steps:

  • Find an animal from the desired species on the map;
  •  Throw an appropriate food item on the ground next to it;
  • Once it is done eating, get close to it and hold the Interact button until it is tamed.

Chickens are even easier since all you need to do is catch up to them and press the Interact button. However, all of those steps have their own complications. While animals of all types may be found in the wilder parts of the map, they have different preferred spots. They also favor different foodstuffs. Getting close to them can be especially challenging – chickens are skittish, while the other beasts are aggressive and often have a backup from others of their kind. Sadly, taming one animal does nothing to persuade its packmates.

The Hunter’s Cloak is an invaluable asset for this endeavor. You can create it through the crafting system using two Animal Bones and one piece of Meat acquired by hunting or scavenging. It can conceal you from the animals for three seconds before needing to cool down for ten seconds. They will not attack or run from you while it is active, though you should still watch out for other players, who can still see you and might scare them off or take advantage of your efforts. If you succeed, however, you will have a loyal and useful companion for the rest of the match or until its death – a far cry from the purely cosmetic pets that may show up on the Battle Pass.

Boars

Unlike the other beasts, boars are solitary, though they may still spawn close to other boars. They are most commonly found on the northeastern side of the map. To get a boar’s attention, you will need a “vegetarian” food item such as corn or fruit. Those may be found in produce boxes or harvested directly from farm locations such as The Orchard or Colossal Crops.

A solitary Boar may be easier to sneak up on, but just as with their real-life counterparts, you should be wary of those creatures’ ferocity and territoriality. They retain it when tamed – the boar will follow you around, but charge in a straight line at any enemy it detects. Still, boars are sturdy and can provide a tenacious distraction, allowing you to score some easy kills.

Wolves

The canines spawn during the night in small packs of two or three members and usually appear in wooded areas along the edges of the primal zone. The wolves are solely interested in Meat, which may only be acquired from other animals (other than frogs). Even after they are tamed, they may find Meat lying around on the ground distracting.

Wild wolves may often be found hunting boars, which presents an opportunity for an enterprising player. Although less durable than their prey, the wolves are more tactical and benefit from faster movement and attack speed. As allies, they will stalk and pounce on whoever shoots at you, which can be of great help when trying to earn more Arena Hype Points.

Raptors

Those relatively compact dinosaurs have started to hatch in patch 16.10, showing up all over the map but especially by its northern and southern edges. They always spawn in duos and can summon reinforcements by screeching if alarmed. The raptors’ stats are perhaps the best among current animals; their attacks are particularly damaging and it is impossible for player characters to outrun them.

Like wolves, raptors can be tamed using Meat, though you will need to be extra careful about the second raptor in the pair. The Hunter’s Cloak is practically necessary for dealing with raptors under most circumstances. Afterward, the tamed reptile will follow you around faithfully and slice up your enemies with its claws, clearing the path to your wins.

Chickens

The birds may be found anywhere on the map, though for some reason they are especially common in the time-displaced autumn-like biomes. They always spawn in groups. Unlike the other animals, chickens lack all combat ability. The only danger in going after them is that they will try to run away if they can see you and might distract you long enough for you to become someone else’s kill. Fortunately, they do not require any food from you either. All you need to do is grab one, letting you use it as an item.

While you have the chicken in your hand, your character will be immune to falling damage, jump higher, and always fall more slowly. Trying to switch to another item or weapon will cause the chicken to escape, which will immediately end the effect. Enemy sharpshooters may take out the bird to achieve the same result. Nevertheless, the bird can allow you to redeploy swiftly across the map, especially if you make use of a shockwave effect to get around. With practice or coaching, you can learn to use ridiculously effective chicken-based strategies.

Conclusion

The developers have hinted that the current assortment of animals is only the beginning. Larger and deadlier beasts will come to the island later in-season and beyond. The ones that are already there have proven themselves to be more than an amusing diversion. In good hands, they can be game-changing assets, as evidenced by people complaining about their presence. If you want to win, be sure that you understand their potential, whether to use it yourself or to prevent them from being used against you.
